Leesburg Council to Consider Additional Candidate for Vacancy

Leesburg Council to Consider Additional Candidate for Vacancy

The Leesburg Town Council will consider a fifth candidate for its vacant seat at its Jan. 9 meeting. Josh Thiel is the new applicant seeking appointment to a special term on the board, joining Jed, Babbin, Rusty Foster, Hugh Forsythe and Gwen Pangle.

Former Vice Mayor Kelly Burk won the mayoral election in November, leaving her former spot vacant on the Council. The six current council members received 12 applications to the position and ranked their preferred candidates, eventually selecting four finalists. Over the weekend, the Council saw there was a miscommunication with the initial ranking system and Thiel was also invited to present, according to a release from Town Public Information Officer Betsy Arnett.

Each of the five will make a presentation to the current council members explaining their interest in the appointment, their unique skill sets and experiences as well as their list of priorities for the Council. Then, the Council will make a decision on not just the appointment, but its duration. The Council will have to decided whether to have a special election in March or in conjunction with the Virginia state elections in November.
