A Herndon man was charged Aug. 31 with two counts of malicious injury by use of a caustic substance and one count of attempted malicious injury by caustic substance after he was accused of spraying pepper spray in the direction of middle-school children at the area of the Washington and Old Dominion trail in Ashburn.
According to a report from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, the children were standing in the 44200 block of Gloucester Parkway when a cyclist approached them holding an aerosol container in his hand. As the cyclist passed, he sprayed what the juveniles think was pepper spray in their direction.
Deputies located the cyclist in the area of the trail and Ruritan Circle. They apprehended and charged Marcos A. Catalan, 47, as a result of the investigation.
Two girls were taken to a local hospital and treated for exposure to the chemical and are expected to fully recover.
Catalan remains held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on no bond.
