Specialty Soda and Candy Shop Opens in Leesburg

When Ashburn resident Carolyn Johnson took a ski trip to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, in March 2013 she visited a Rocket Fizz Soda Pop; Candy Shop, but didn’t think she would be the one bringing the franchise to Loudoun County.

Three years later, when Johnson was looking for a new job, she remembered Rocket Fizz. In March 2016, she submitted an application to open the store and by May she was looking for space.  In December, the Rocket Fizz in Leesburg opened and Johnson realized her vision of sharing family-oriented store with Loudoun.

Johnson and local officials celebrated the opening of the Leesburg store with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 27 followed by a grand opening celebration the next day.

Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk, Vice Mayor Suzanne Fox and Councilman Ron Campbell attended the celebration at the Village of Leesburg shopping center, along with other town officials, Tony Howard, President of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, and Tina Johnson, Chairwoman of the chamber.

“Rocket Fizz has more than 100 unique soda flavors under their own brand, and our store carries more than 500 varieties of soda. Our flavors range from the old fashioned to the bizarre, with everything from black cherry soda to sweet corn, pumpkin pie and even s’more flavored soda,” Johnson said.

Rocket Fizz also had a jar filled with its more than 90 flavors of salt water taffy. Customers were asked to guess the number of pieces of for a chance to win the jar of taffy as well as a $25 gift certificate. The winner was four-year-old James Murphy, who guessed 452 pieces.

The eclectically decorated store sells candy and soda that adults will recognize from their childhood. It also sell foreign candy, gag gifts, concert and movie posters and tin signs. The store also sells custom sodas that customers can purchase for special occasion such as graduations, birthdays and baby showers.

Customers can find Rocket Fizz brand sodas by the front of the store. In the back, they’ll find shelves filled with different kinds of creme soda and root beer, as well as classic Coca-Cola and Pepsi products and their sugar-free variations. On the right-hand wall with the taffies and other candies, customers can find a wide variety of fruit sodas too.

“People come in and they know exactly what they’re looking for. We’ve had some real root beer connoisseurs come in for our selection,” Johnson said. “My favorite thing is hearing the parents when they find candy from their childhood that they didn’t even know was made anymore.”

Rocket Fizz was founded in 2007 by Rob Powells and Ryan Morgan. Their first store opened in Camarillo, California in 2009, and in less than five years, Rocket Fizz has become the largest and fastest growing soda pop and candy shop franchise brand in America. The company now has 82 stores across the country.
