Representatives from the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department and the Washington Redskins celebrate the first place finish in the chili cook-off with winners Briana Fontaine (holding trophy) and Darren Skuches (front row with black shirt) of b restaurant.
More than 500 people attended the third annual Chilly Days Chili Fundraiser on Jan. 21 to benefit the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. The event, held at Old Ox Brewery in Ashburn, was estimated to raise more than $9,000 for the department.
“We see people at their worst times from the fire trucks, so it’s really nice to see the community come back in these happier times to help us do what we do,” said AVFRD chief Miguel Quijano.
Patrons in this year’s event could sample chili from 12 partner restaurants, and the restaurants themselves competed in a cook-off. B restaurant came in first place, followed by Buffalo Wing Factory in second with Cava Grill and Lansdowne Resort & Spa tied for third.
The cook-off was the centerpiece of the event, which also featured fundraising efforts including corporate sponsorships, t-shirt sales and patron donations. Old Ox also produced a special brew just for the AVFR, the War Wagon Kolsch, and is donating $1 for every sale of the beer to the department.
It also served as a showcase for recruitment efforts as the AVFRD looks to reach out to the community for needed volunteers.
“This has become our signature event,” said AVFRD volunteer Barbara Murphy.
