If you frequent new Loudoun County restaurants and other trendy spots, chances are you’ve seen Andrew Sample at work.
Sample has photographed openings and events at Blackfinn Ameripub, Velocity Wings and Magnolias at the Mill. He regularly does real estate pictures for Pearson Smith Realty and others, along with fashion shoots for magazines and blogs such as Posh Seven and Oh Hey Hapa. He has been on the sidelines of several Washington Redskins games.
He’s even worked for Oprah Winfrey’s operations.
“I’ve been interested in photography since I was young,” said Sample, 36, owner of Leesburg-based Andrew Sample Photography. “My mother was a professional photographer, so I’m taking after her.”
The shot for O, The Oprah Magazine, was taken of a group of 13 people in front of a McLean business. A partner at a local video production company referred Sample to get that high-profile gig. For the Redskins shoot, an event company helped land him that job.
“I grew up in the area and have worked at a lot of different places. So I know a lot of people,” he noted. “You never know when the right situation will work out.”
After attending Notre Dame Academy – now Middleburg Academy – Sample studied sports and events management at Johnson and Wales University. He found himself gravitating to photography after a couple years of studying that and other subjects at the Art Institute of Washington.
Sample gained some experience with jobs for Ocean Images and Holland America Cruise Lines, as well as Ace Photo in Ashburn. With the cruise lines, he traveled throughout the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America.
“It was only for a few months, but I had an amazing time doing that,” he said.
Along the way, he built up his camera inventory to eventually branch off on his own. A single lens can cost several thousand dollars, so it’s not exactly a budget situation. “I use mostly Canon equipment,” Sample said.
