A Leesburg bicyclist remains in critical condition after a vehicle truck her along the Route 15 Bypass around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 13.
Shortly after reports of someone riding a bicycle in the center eastbound lane of the bypass, a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by a 19-year-old Purcellville resident struck the 24-year-old bicyclist, according to the Leesburg Police Department.
Callers reported that vehicles were having to swerve around the bicyclist; at 5:20 p.m. the Leesburg Police Emergency Communications Center received a call that a vehicle struck her.
When officers arrived, they found the bicyclist with multiple injuries on the bypass between South King Street and the Dulles Greenway.
The victim was flown by AirCare to Winchester Hospital where she remains in critical condition, according to a Leesburg report about the incident. Investigators are not yet sure why the woman was riding in the travel lanes.
The accident caused police to close the bypass down for about 3 hours. Traffic was diverted to South King Street.
