Behind another strong performance from starting pitcher Wilson Ayers and a string of timely hits, the Briar Woods High School baseball defeated Newport News Menchville 6-1 in the VHSL regional championship. With the win, the Falcons will face Halifax County June 10 for the state championship.

Ayers continued his excellent season, tossing five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run, four hits and striking out seven Monarchs. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning.

After replacing Ayers, Jack Jaekle got the final four outs of the game for the save.

Bolstered by its solid pitching, Briar Woods’ bats provided more than enough run support.

Tyler Germanowski got the scoring started in the second inning with a two-out double against the outfield wall, scoring Jaekle and Patrick Dengler. Jake Kleifges then drew a walk, and Alex Bjornsten followed with a single, scoring Germanowski while staking the Falcons to a 3-0 lead.

The Falcons chased Menchville starting pitcher Tyler Knapp after a pair of singles with no outs in the third. After George Rosales and Sean Clark reached base, relief pitcher Ryan Webster then caught Ayers attempt to bunt the runners over. Webster then got Dengler to ground into a double play, end the threat.

Menchvile threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out after a single by Sean Collins and a pair of walks. Riley Sweeney then drove Collins home on a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 3-1. Kyle Ortiz then hit a single, but Rosales picked off a few pitches later, ending the Monarch’s threat.
