Child Killed By Falling Tree at Family Gathering in Purcellville

A tragic accident involving a hammock at a family gathering claimed the life of a child Saturday in Purcellville.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, two children were swinging on the hammock about 6 p.m. in the 37800 block of St. Francis Court in Purcellville.

A tree holding the hammock fell on top of the children. One was airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital and died later from her injuries. The second child was taken by ground to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the case is considered an accident.
