We Think: Independence Day

We Think: Independence Day

June 28, 2016.

The aliens in Independence Day Resurgence make for a good narrative, but they’re not real and won’t matter when the movie ends. Our Fourth of July is another story.

It’s not just a weekend of parades, cookouts and fireworks. It’s a time to take a long pause and think about how lucky we are to be Americans. We’re besieged by bad behavior all around us, and threatened by bad actors all over the world. Some days we wonder if the American Dream is still alive and what it even means.

It’s alive, inspiration is everywhere, and sometimes a reflective pause is what’s needed to reconnect with what makes America great.

In Common Sense, Thomas Paine wrote, “The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind.”

Independence Day is a celebration of our America, and of the freedom and opportunity granted to us that is greater than anywhere else in the world.  This weekend if you’re tempted to wonder if America will survive as the nation Paine imagined, remember that it’s up to each of us to make sure that question is answered in the affirmative. It’s our movie, and it’s real.
