Leesburg Police Investigate Attempted Assault on W&OD Trail

A woman jogging along the Washington and Old Dominion Bike Trail at approximately 6:30 a.m. today reported being approached by an unknown man displaying what appeared to be a box cutter, Jeff Dubé, Leesburg Police Public Information Officer said.

The victim, a off duty Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputy, was able to run away unharmed and the suspect also ran from the scene. No physical contact took place between the suspect and the victim.

The alleged assault occurred on the trail between Valley View Avenue and South King Street. The suspect is described as a black male in his 50’s wearing all dark clothing.

Multiple units responded in an attempt to locate the suspect. The Leesburg Police were assisted in the investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) and the Fairfax County Police Department, Dubé said.

This is the second reported attempted assault on the trail this week. It is unclear if the two attempted assaults are connected, and the investigation is ongoing. Leesburg Police and the LCSO urge trail visitors to take extra safety precautions such as traveling in groups and carrying a cell phone.
