Low Varsity Numbers Force Park View High School to Alter 2018 Season

The following email was sent Thursday (Aug. 9) to parents of Park View High School students:

The purpose of this message is to provide you accurate information regarding the status of varsity football at Park View High School. Yesterday evening, the PVH administrators and representatives from LCPS Administration met with members of the PVH football program and their families. The following points were shared with students and their families:

Loudoun County Public Schools has decided to alter Park View High School’s varsity football schedule for the 2018 season. This decision has been made with student safety as the top priority.

Park View had 18 varsity-level players report for the opening of practice this month, half of whom had never played football. Given the highly competitive nature of Park View’s schedule, it was decided by school and school division officials that playing at the varsity level this season would have exposed players to a heightened and unacceptable risk of injury.

LCPS coaches and athletic directors are working on an alternate schedule for this season that reflects Park View’s level of competitiveness. It is anticipated that PVH will play a varsity independent schedule for the 2019 season. During this time Park View’s coaching staff will work to build the football program back to a safe, competitive level.

In accordance with the Virginia High School League, Park View’s veteran varsity players will be allowed to join the roster of another LCPS high school without the liabilities traditionally associated with transfers.

68-4-2 Recommendation-VHSL recommends that no member school which has less than 25 students physically fit and eligible for participation engage in varsity football.

For the 2018 football season, PVH will not have a varsity squad and will only field a JV squad. We are expecting to follow the same game schedule with some possible minor changes, which will be announced as soon as we are able to secure that information.

We realize that this impacts many other student organizations, all of whom have been contacted, and plans are in place to flexibly accommodate any necessary changes to those activities. As was stated previously, this decision was made based on students’ safety. If you have any questions for me, please contact me at kirk.dolson@lcps.org. I am hopeful that we can come together as a community as we build all programs at PVH towards improvement.
