A new permanent roundabout is open to drivers at Poland Road and Edgewater Street in South Riding, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The new, $1.9 million single-lane roundabout features a raised center island, as well as new curb and gutter along the approaches to the intersection to improve safety and drainage.
VDOT said some detail work will continue this summer, but it should not have a major impact on traffic. The project is expected to be under budget and finish ahead of its October completion date.
The new permanent roundabout replaced a temporary configuration that was installed in 2013 to help improve safety and relieve significant backups during rush hours. The temporary roundabout received a national safety award from the Roadway Safety Foundation and Federal Highway Administration in 2017 for the sharp reduction in crashes at the intersection in both number and severity.
There were 10 crashes causing seven injuries in the year before the installation, with only three crashes and no injuries in the year and a half after it was installed.
