Pets/People Event to Fight Cancers Shared by Kids and Dogs

Two and four-legged athletes are running and walking to help crush cancer in the inaugural Two By Four Race Against Childhood & Canine Cancer. The Canines-N-Kids Foundation and Smashing Walnuts Foundation are partnering to host this timed 5k race and un-timed 1 mile Dog Jog/Fun Run. All net proceeds will support these nonprofits’ work to raise funds and awareness for cutting-edge research in the cancers that kids and pet dogs BOTH develop. The event will also feature an awards ceremony, vendor fair, and kids and pet activities.

Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related childhood death in the US and also claims the lives of 47 percent of dogs. Kids and dogs develop similar and even the same cancers such as brain cancer, osteosarcoma, lymphoma and leukemia.  The problems inherent in designing and implementing pediatric oncology clinical trials coupled with scant resources makes finding a cure difficult.  For dogs diagnosed with cancer, the outlook is no better.  Canines-N-Kids Foundation is a nonprofit committed to finding a cure to the devastating cancers that both get by advancing comparative oncology, the study of similar cancers that occur in animals and people.

The Smashing Walnuts Foundation is a nonprofit started by 9-year-old Gabriella Miller and her family to support childhood brain cancer research. Gabriella’s life was soon lost to a “walnut-sized” brain tumor, but her legacy lives on in the work of the Foundation. By teaming up, Canines-N-Kids and Smashing Walnuts are working at the local and national level to find treatments that crush cancer.
