Beginning tomorrow — July 1 — operators of short-term residential rentals will be required to register with Loudoun County.
Operators of such rentals, such as airbnb, can find a Loudoun County Short-Term Rental Registration Form online at loudoun.gov/ShortTermRentals.
Registration is free.
After completing the registration form, operators will receive a confirmation e-mail with a copy of the registration for their records. Operators who do not register with the county may face a fine of $500 per violation.
The registration is required under an ordinance adopted by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors earlier this year. The ordinance is intended to help the county monitor and evaluate the growth of short-term residential rentals.
County officials say they will use the registry established by the ordinance to provide operators of short-term residential rentals with important information and resources — including information about necessary permits, applicable fire regulations and the Transient Occupancy Tax, which generally applies to establishments that offer temporary lodging for four or more people at one time.
Adoption of the ordinance completed Phase 1 of the Board’s Short-Term Residential Rental Work Plan. Phase 2 of the work plan is currently underway, focusing on zoning, land use and public safety issues. The county also plans to conduct an online survey to gauge community opinion about land use issues to help inform the direction of a potential zoning ordinance amendment related to short-term residential rentals.
