Sterling Teen Strikes Gold In Fencing
A Sterling teenager is excelling in a sport that normally not part of any school’s physical education or sports curriculum.
Michaela Joyce competed in the Regional Open Circuit regional tournament in fencing. She brought home gold in the Open/Division 1A Women’s Epee category Dec. 17 at Roland Park County School in Baltimore.
Joyce, who attends Nysmith School for the Gifted, has also qualified for the Junior Olympics in all age categories earlier this year.
She trains at Loudoun International Fencing Club and is coached by Ilya Lobanenkov.

The Regional Open Circuit (ROC) is designed to promote and develop strong regional tournaments for the Open/Division I-A fencer who seeks competitive opportunities beyond the local and sectional level.
