To the Editor: Comstock Wrong on Guns

I am a Loudoun Mom of two children. I am concerned about gun violence and the lax laws governing gun sales and ownership. I was horrified when Trump incited gun violence via his “Second Amendment” followers. I waited and waited for our Congressional representative Barbara Comstock to denounce his comments, but all I heard were crickets. Why? Because as the third largest recipient of NRA money ($7,900 so far), according to Open Secrets, Comstock supports laws that keep the NRA happy. In fact, Comstock voted YES as a Virginia State Delegate on all of the following:

·         HB 940 to repeal one gun a month

·         HB 754  to eliminate need for fingerprints

·         HB 22 to restrict gun buybacks

·         HB 505  to allow guns in bars

Women in the United States are 11 times more likely to die from a gun than our peers in other countries and a University of Pennsylvania study showed that people who carry guns are 4.5 times as likely to be shot and 4.2 times as likely to get killed by guns compared with unarmed citizens. We need to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, and we need to elect lawmakers who will make that a priority. So on November 8, I will be voting for LuAnn Bennett, who has rightfully denounced Trump for his comments inciting gun violence, and who stands on the side of people and children in her community. And I encourage all Loudoun Moms who care for their children’s and their own safety to join me.
