Virginia State Police identified Juan Bernabe Reinaga Zapata of Manassas as the fatality in an early morning crash today (Sept. 18) on eastbound Interstate 66 that forced the closure of the highway for about four hours and backed up traffic for an estimated five miles.
VSP said Zapata, 21, was the driver of a Toyota sedan in the crash that also involved three pickup trucks near mile marker 62 (Nutley Street) in Fairfax County. The cause and sequence of the crash remain under investigation at this time. No charges have been placed.
Zapata died at the scene. Two other drivers were transported to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Fairfax for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The crash was reported at 4:21 a.m. The scene was cleared about 8:30 a.m.
